Overview

We are looking for Furnace Melter to join our team. The Furnace Melter will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the melting furnace in the steel production process. The role involves loading the furnace pot with metal scraps, monitoring the melting process, and ensuring that molten metal meets the required quality specifications for onward production. The Furnace Melter plays a critical role in maintaining uninterrupted production flow while adhering to all health, safety and environmental standards.

Responsibilities

  • Load and feed the furnace pot with metal scraps and other raw materials as per production requirements.
  • Monitor furnace temperature, pressure and performance parameters throughout the melting cycle.
  • Operate and control furnace equipment including charging machines, tapping systems and slag removal tools.
  • Regulate fuel, oxygen and power inputs to achieve and maintain optimal melting conditions.
  • Tap molten metal from the furnace at the appropriate time and temperature for transfer to casting or refining.
  • Remove slag and other by-products from the furnace as required.
  • Ensure melted metal meets defined chemical composition, temperature and quality standards.
  • Conduct visual and instrument-based inspection of molten metal before releasing to downstream processes.
  • Collaborate with quality control personnel to take samples and support metallurgical analysis.
  • Report and escalate any deviations in material quality or furnace performance immediately.
  • Perform routine pre-shift and post-shift inspections of furnace equipment, refractory linings and associated tools.
  • Identify and report any equipment faults, wear or mechanical failures to maintenance teams.
  • Ensure furnace area is kept clean, organized and free of hazards at all times.
  • Adhere strictly to all personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, including heatresistant gear, face shields, gloves and safety boots.
  • Comply with all health, safety and environmental (HSE) regulations, company policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain accurate production logs including scrap quantities loaded, heat numbers, tap temperatures and cycle times.
  • Complete shift handover reports and communicate relevant information to oncoming shift personnel.
  • Record and report near misses, incidents or unsafe conditions in accordance with company procedures.

Requirements

  • Senior High School Certificate (WASSCE) or equivalent; a technical/vocational certificate is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of hands-on experience operating a furnace in a steel, foundry or metal manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scrap metal classification and furnace charging procedures.
  • Familiarity with basic metallurgy principles and steel production processes.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in high-temperature, physically demanding environments.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for handling heavy materials and equipment.
  • Ability to remain alert and make sound decisions under time pressure.
  • Strong observational skills with a detail-oriented approach to quality and safety.
  • Team player with good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays.
  • Basic numerical and record-keeping ability for logging production data.
