Overview

The Safety Advisor will ensure that workplace health and safety standards are met. This role is critical in fostering a secure work environment by advising on safety practices, conducting risk assessments, and enforcing preventive measures across various operations.

Responsibilities

• Implement key components of the Asanko Safety Management System across various operations including Processing, Mining, Projects, Exploration, Administration, and Contractor areas. • Develop procedures that integrate safe behavior into the overall system. • Lead operational teams in performing and reviewing risk assessments, including Baseline Risk Assessments (biannually), WRACs, JHAs, Individual Risk Assessments, and Take 5s, ensuring compliance when needed. • Create schedules and oversee critical control monitoring with Supervisors. • Conduct thorough investigations of incidents using appropriate techniques like ICAM to identify root causes. • Use behavior-based safety techniques to develop and deliver safety training and pre-shift briefings. • Perform safety audits and inspections, ensuring compliance with legal and statutory requirements. • Implement and enforce Asanko’s contractor management procedures, ensuring adherence by both Asanko and contractors. • Maintain accurate safety documentation and records in line with system requirements. • Monitor staff for signs of stress and notify supervisors or managers when necessary. • Advise employees on potential hazards and initiate evacuation procedures if needed. • Restrict access to incident sites and take action to minimize health and safety risks. • Coordinate further response actions with the Incident Commander and local emergency teams. • Ensure safety measures on-site, including proper use of personal protective equipment, managing ignition sources, and assessing evacuation needs. • Carry out other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

• A degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field from a recognized institution. • NEBOSH General Certificate or an equivalent certification from a recognized body is preferred. • MINCOM Health and Safety Certificate is required. • A minimum of four years’ post-qualification experience in a similar role within the mining or related industry. • In-depth knowledge of local health and safety regulations. • Strong understanding of safety management systems. • Expertise in risk management and loss prevention processes. • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, along with strong interpersonal abilities. • Strong conflict resolution skills and experience in managing information. • Effective planning, organizing, and prioritizing capabilities. • Good critical thinking and problem-solving skills. • Detail-oriented with a strong sense of organization and diligence.
